They drive themselves to their daily activities. However, with growing age comes the physical and mental challenges. Now seeing this problem and the increasing number of vehicles on the road the government has decided to come up with a new system. This particular system will ensure the independence of the elderly, however at the same time it will also promote road safety.
Proposed Changes in The New Law
So now that we have why the new law is needed, it is time to understand what changes that it brings.
License Renewal:
Now under this new law every license holder will need to renew their license after reaching a certain age. As per their age they’ll also be required to take some special tests to prove their worthiness. For every age there would be different rules:
- For persons with the age between 70 to 80 years, the renewal is required after every 4 years with in per visit and a mandatory eye test.
- For individuals between the age 81 to 86 years the license renewal is required after every 2 years. An eye test is compulsory, but seeing the conditions the department may also ask for a mental test from you.
- After the age of 87 years, there is a requirement of mandatory eye and road test every year.
Now the new rules clearly want to judge an individual based on their physical and mentally ability, not just on age.
Different Tests Under New Law
Now user these new rules, the elderly drivers will need to go under different tests while getting their license renewed:
1. Vision Test
Having a good vision is the very first thing that you need for driving a vehicle. Old age is often associated with poor eyesight and issues like glaucoma and cataracts. Seeing this, it becomes important for DMV to test not only the driving skills but also the vision of an individual before the license is renewed. If you wear glasses or lenses then you’ll be allowed to take tests with them.
2. Cognitive Test
During the license renewal process the DMV feels that the memory or the cognitive functions of an individual are deteriorating due to old age then he or she may be asked to give a cognitive test.
3. Behind-the-Wheel Test
As per the new driving license rule for U.S. seniors, every individual with the age 87 years or more need to take the road test. This test is important in order to ensure their preparedness while driving on the roads.
Tips To Prepare for New Driving License Rule
The new rules will come into force from the month of July 2025. So it is advised to the senior citizens to start preparing for these new guidelines. Below we have discussed some of the steps that you can take in order to be ready:
- Make sure that you get your eye test done 90 days in advance for your renewal date. As this would give you ample time to get the report in hand and you’ll face no delay in your renewal.
- Before you go for the license renewal make sure that the clearance certificate from the doctor is ready. You can get NOC from your cardiologist and neurologist.

- If it’s needed then there is no harm in taking a defensive driving course in advance.
Some Additional Requirements
There is also a provision for the restricted licensing. As the government very well knows, even though an individual is not completely disabled, they still might have certain restrictions with them. So in that case they will be given driving license with some restrictions such as:
- Only allowed to drive during day
- Only allowed to drive within a certain distance from the house.
- No permission to drive on a highway.
